Three things worth knowing before you plan a stop

Markfield at Junction 22 is largely closed. The main building shut in 2014 and the petrol station in 2020. Only the Travelodge is open — no fuel, no food, no public parking. Three of the standard published lists of M1 services still show it as a normal stop.

Rotherham at Junction 33 is new. It opened in January 2025, the first new Welcome Break motorway service area in twenty years, and several widely used services lists have not caught up with it.

You cannot always walk between the two sides. Toddington, Newport Pagnell, Watford Gap and Woodall have footbridges. Tibshelf and Woolley Edge do not — at Woolley Edge a footbridge was never built because of unstable coal seams beneath the site. At Northampton the bridge still stands but has been closed to the public since 2002.

The longest gaps without a stop

The M1 is generously served at its southern end and thins out in the middle. There is nothing between Junction 17 and Junction 21, and nothing between Junction 45 and the end of the motorway at Junction 48. Between Junction 4 and Junction 11A there is only one stop, at London Gateway.

See also the map of the M1 junctions, which shows every service area in place along the route, and how busy each stretch of the M1 is.

Service area details are compiled from the operators’ own published information and were last checked on 14 September 2026. Facilities change — if something here is out of date, please tell us and we will correct it.
