M1

Leicester Markfield Services (M1 J22)

Leicester Markfield is a signed motorway service area at Junction 22, between Coalville and Leicester. It is largely closed, and if you are planning a stop here you should plan a different one.

What is actually open, and what is not

The main amenity building closed in 2014. The petrol station, and the HGV and coach parking, closed in July 2020. What remains open is the Travelodge, which sells snacks and soft drinks at reception around the clock and offers a breakfast to take away. There is no fuel, no EV charging, no restaurant and no public parking. The site is owned by EG On The Move, which has described it as being in a very tired, derelict state and has proposed demolishing the abandoned building and rebuilding with a forecourt, two drive-thru units and twelve EV charging points. We have not been able to find a planning record or a news report confirming that scheme, so treat it as reported rather than agreed.

What is at Leicester Markfield Services

Three of the standard published lists of M1 service areas leave Markfield out altogether — which is part of why it is worth a page of its own.

Service area details are compiled from the operators’ own published information and were last checked on 14 September 2026. Facilities change — if something here is out of date, please tell us and we will correct it.
