Rotherham Services (M1 J33)

Rotherham services sit at Junction 33, and they are the newest service area on the M1 by a wide margin. Run by Welcome Break, they opened in January 2025 — the company’s first new motorway service area in twenty years. Several published lists of M1 services still do not have them.

Built as a Yorkshire village, with the lorry park on the other side of the motorway

The interior is designed as a traditional Yorkshire village: a village square with a fountain, stone shop fronts, street names, and a red telephone box housing a defibrillator. The layout is genuinely unusual — car parking and the main building sit south of the M1 while HGV parking and the lorry drivers’ facilities sit north of it, connected by an underpass. Being at a junction, it is reachable from both carriageways and from the A630 Sheffield Parkway.

What is at Rotherham Services

• Food and drink: KFC, Burger King, Pret A Manger, Chopstix, Starbucks and a standalone Starbucks Drive Thru, The Good Breakfast, Krispy Kreme

• Fuel and charging: a forecourt with an HGV pump; Applegreen Electric and a Tesla Supercharger

• Also: an outdoor gym, a dog exercise pen, children’s soft play, a gaming zone, and a first-floor business lounge for remote working

Two hours free, then charges apply. One thing lorry drivers have flagged: the HGV pump has a height restriction that some report is too low for larger trailers.

The services sit on the stretch between Junction 31 and Junction 32, which the Department for Transport counts at 155,303 vehicles a day — the 6th busiest of the 42 measured stretches of M1 mainline. Of those, 20,707 are lorries, 13.3% of the traffic. That is the nearest measured stretch, immediately south of the junction. The Department for Transport does not publish a separate figure for J32 to J33.
