Tibshelf Services (M1 J28–J29)
Tibshelf sits on the M1 between Junction 28 and Junction 29 in Derbyshire. The buildings are run by Roadchef while the site and its forecourts belong to Extra — an unusual split, and the forecourts are Shell.
Two sides, and no way to walk between them
There is a site on each carriageway and no public connection between them, so the side you pull in on is the side you get. The site was identified as a service area location in 1960 and did not open until 1999 — a gap of nearly forty years, and it was going to be called Chesterfield services.

The traffic around Tibshelf Services
The services sit on the stretch between Junction 28 and Junction 29, which the Department for Transport counts at 136,489 vehicles a day — the 13th busiest of the 42 measured stretches of M1 mainline. Of those, 21,096 are lorries, 15.5% of the traffic. That is a high lorry count in absolute terms — the most of any stretch on the northern half of the M1 — which is why the lorry park was worth expanding.
Traffic figures are Department for Transport road traffic statistics, annual average daily flow for 2025, both directions combined.
