Watford Gap Services (M1 J16–J17)

Watford Gap sits on the M1 between Junction 16 and Junction 17 in Northamptonshire. It is run by Roadchef, and it opened on 2 November 1959 — the day the M1 opened.

The name is a real place, and it is not the Watford you are thinking of

The Watford Gap is a genuine geological pass, and within a corridor about 400 metres wide it carries the Roman Watling Street, the Grand Union Canal, the West Coast Main Line and the M1. The phrase “north of Watford” is often said to mean this Watford rather than the Hertfordshire one at Junction 5, seventy miles south — though which of the two the saying originally meant has never actually been settled. There is a site on each carriageway, linked by a footbridge. Drivers still call it the Blue Boar, after the original operator.

The services sit on the stretch between Junction 16 and Junction 17, which the Department for Transport counts at 120,092 vehicles a day — the 22nd busiest of the 42 measured stretches of M1 mainline. Of those, 22,231 are lorries, 18.5% of the traffic. That is the highest lorry share anywhere on the M1 — nearly one vehicle in five. In April 2026 Roadchef announced a £300m investment and 75-year lease extensions covering both sides of Watford Gap.
