Newport Pagnell Services (M1 J14–J15)
Newport Pagnell sits on the M1 between Junction 14 and Junction 15 in Buckinghamshire, near Milton Keynes. It is run by Welcome Break, and it is one of the two oldest motorway service areas in Britain.
It opened the day the M1 did
The fuel station opened on 2 November 1959, the day the motorway itself opened, with the northbound café following in August 1960. The buildings were designed by Sir Owen Williams, the M1’s own engineer. There is a site on each carriageway joined by a footbridge, though the bridge is reached only by steps.

The traffic around Newport Pagnell Services
The services sit on the stretch between Junction 14 and Junction 15, which the Department for Transport counts at 113,762 vehicles a day — the 23rd busiest of the 42 measured stretches of M1 mainline. Of those, 17,495 are lorries, 15.4% of the traffic. At 12.2 miles this is the longest measured stretch on the M1, so the services sit a good way from both junctions. A piece of motorway history: the first crash barriers on any British motorway were installed running south from here in 1971.
