Traffic drops by a fifth past the junction

The stretch north of the junction carries 21,883 fewer vehicles a day, about a fifth less. That is a net figure — traffic joins here as well as leaves — but it is consistent with a large share of the M1’s traffic south of Catthorpe heading for the M6 and the A14. The lorry share tells the same story: 17.5% south of the junction, the 3rd highest on the M1, against 13.8% north of it. J18 to J19 combines two count points either side of a local-authority boundary that report the same measurement, published once.
Rebuilt from 2014 to 2016
The interchange was rebuilt between 2014 and 2016. Work ran from 06/01/2014 to 22/12/2016 at a cost of £191 million, the Highways England figure. A figure published in December 2019 put more than 157,000 vehicles a day through the interchange.
Two movements you cannot make
There is no link from the A14 to the M1 southbound, and none from the M1 northbound onto the A14. If either is your route, plan it before you set off rather than at the junction.
The M6 towards Birmingham
